其中的 https 表示使用 SSL 連線，比使用 http 較安全些。
由於 Gmail 目前尚未開放自由申請，所以想要 Gmail 帳號
的使用者必須由已經擁有帳號的使用者發邀請函，
不過 sync 兄在 Sayya BBS 上提到 isnoop.net's gmail invite spooler
( http://isnoop.net/gmailomatic.php )
這個網站有在發 Gmail 邀請函，也接受邀請函。
不過我並沒去看過這個網頁，有興趣的人可以自行去看看。

Gmail 有那些特色呢？

• Gmail is a free, search-based webmail service
  that includes 1,000 megabytes (1 gigabyte) of
  storage. The backbone of Gmail is a powerful
  Google search engine that quickly finds any
  message an account owner has ever sent or received.

  每一個 Gmail 帳號擁有 1,000 MB (1 GB) 的信箱容量，
  並搭配 Google search engine，因此使用者可以很快速、
  方便地找到自己想要的信件。

• With Gmail, all replies are grouped with the original
  message, creating a single conversation.

  Gmail 會將回信及原來的信件組合成一個 conversation
  （像 thread 的東西），舉例來說，你（妳）和你（妳）
  的工作小組以信件討論了一個工作計畫，於是 Gmail
  會將你（妳）們往返的信件組合成一個 conversation，
  這麼一來，瀏覽信件時可以很方便地瀏覽前後的信件內容。

  上圖中，標題為“Using PIL in zope product”及

  上圖則是瀏覽一個 conversation 的畫面，
  在一個 conversation 中，信件會依日期順序排列，
  }使用者可以很方便地閱讀前後的信件。

  
  


• GMail 是 UTF-8 的系統，基本上它可以正常處理多國語言。


• 在 Gmail 刪除時是一整個 conversation 一起刪除，
  若要個別刪除信件必須先將信件分開才行。
  因為基本上 Gmail 的設計是讓使用者儘量將信件 archive 起來，
  而不是將信件刪除。

  個別刪除一封信件時，先展開 conversation 中的信件，
  按下“More Options”，然後選擇“Trash this message”即可。

  
  Gmail 帳號是不計“.”的，所以 x.y@gmail.com 和 xy@gmail.com 是同一個信箱。


• 一般的 webmail 將信件多採用資料夾的方式來分類信件，
  但如果遇上某封信件可以歸屬兩類以上時就容易造成使用者的困擾。
  Gmail 則設計了 Label 的方式來分類信件，
  因此若有信件屬於兩種以上的類別，使用者可以很方便、
  很輕鬆地標上它的 Label 即可。

  上圖中所示的信件就同時被標示為屬於“Archetypes-users”

• Gmail 的 Filter 功能可以自動地將信件歸類處理。

  另外，也可以搭配“+”使用，例如設一個名為“Box1”的 Label，
  然後在 Filter 中設定寄給 ab+list1 的信件全部歸類到 Box1，
  這樣寄給 ab+list1@gmail.com 的信就會自動歸類到 Box1 了。

• 支援 POP3 及 SMTP


• With Gmail, you can send and receive messages up
  to 10 megabytes (MB) in size.


• 可以直接以 Gmail Account 作為 Google Account，
  使用 Google 其它的服務，如 Google Answer、Google Group 等。

• 安裝 Google 釋出的 Gmail Notifier 軟體後，
  會在 Microsoft Windows 工作列的常駐工具區加入一個
  Gmail Notifier 的圖示，透過這個圖示可以很方便的檢視信箱
  或檢查新郵件。Gmail Notifier 可以在

另外，我將這陣子在網路上看到有關於 Gmail 的資訊
簡單地整理於下，在這篇文章中只整理了部分的內容，
在參考連結中你（妳）可以發現更多的資訊：

• 目前 Google 已提供 Gmail 的 POP3 及 SMTP 服務了。
  但在最初 Gmail 未支援 pop3 收信時，在 Windows 安裝
  .NET framework 及 http://jaybe.org/info.htm
  這個軟體，也可以使用 pop3 收信。

  另外一套軟體 FreePOPs 的功能更強大，不但跨平台，
  而且據說連其它的 WebMail 都可以使用它來將信件 pop 回來，
  FreePOPs 可以在 http://freepops.sourceforge.net/en/ 下載取得。

  
  


• 安裝 Gallina 就可以用 Gmail 來寫 Blog，Gallina 可以在
  http://ion.gluch.org.mx/files/Hacks/gallina/ 下載。

  Candyz (Chung-Yen Chang) 前輩用 Gallina 架了個 Blog 在
  http://candyz.idv.tw/gallina/
  ，並寫了一篇中文的 Gallina HOWTO。



• 利用 GmailFS (Gmail Filesystem) 可以實作網路硬碟，
  在這個網頁有詳細的說明：

  這是個很有趣的東西，Gmail 提供每個帳號 1GB 的信件容量
  ，也就是說可以實作出一個 1GB 的網路硬碟，
  假如你（妳）擁有數個 Gmail 帳號的話，
  就可以用來實作一個容量可觀的網路硬碟了。

• pank.bbs@77bbs.com 在 BBS 站的 Linux 連線版
  發表了一篇安裝 GmailFS 的文章，
  同時他也提到由於網路速度上的限制，實用性不大。

  
  


• 安裝 GMail Drive shell extension 後，
  也可以將 Gmail 變成一個 1GB 大小的網路磁碟，請參http://toget.pchome.com.tw/intro/network_tool/

  GMail Drive shell extension 支援 Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98。
